In the upcoming iPhone 15, Apple is expected to replace the Lightning connector with USB-C, offering extended compatibility, fast charging support, and faster data transfer. However, a recent rumor suggests that the USB-C cable included in the box may be limited to USB 2.0 speeds, disappointing some users.

Leaked images have shown USB-C connectors for the new iPhones, featuring Retimer chips that enable transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps, similar to Thunderbolt devices. These images were followed by leaked images of new braided USB-C cables allegedly made by Apple. These cables are longer and thicker, suggesting increased durability. However, researcher Majin Bu claims that despite the USB-C connector, the leaked cables are limited to USB 2.0 speeds, similar to Lightning cables.

There are several possible scenarios to consider. First, Apple may limit Thunderbolt support to the more expensive iPhone 15 Pro models, similar to their approach with the iPad Pro. Second, Apple may sell Thunderbolt cables separately, as they are typically more expensive than regular USB-C cables. Finally, the leaked cables may not be intended for the iPhone but for new versions of the Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard, which do not require USB 3.0 speeds or Thunderbolt support.

As of now, it remains uncertain which scenario will play out. More information is expected to be revealed during Apple’s rumored special press event on September 12 or 13. Users eagerly await further details on the USB-C cable situation and how it will impact data transfer speeds.

Despite the potential limitation of USB 2.0 speeds, the inclusion of USB-C in the iPhone 15 is still a positive step towards enhanced compatibility and fast charging support. Apple continues to innovate and provide improved user experiences with their devices.
