Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte, the beloved fall beverage, is making its earliest debut in 20 years. Despite the warm temperatures, the coffee giant has decided to release the iconic drink on August 24, a full month before the official start of fall. This move follows Dunkin’ Donuts, which released its line of pumpkin spice drinks and baked goods on August 16. The Pumpkin Spice Latte has become a major industry, generating around $500 million in sales in 2021 alone. While the prices for this year’s PSL have yet to be announced, CNN reported that there was a 4% increase in price due to inflation in 2022. In addition to the classic Pumpkin Spice Latte, Starbucks Reserve locations will be offering special fall-themed beverages such as Pumpkin Spice Whiskey Barrel-Aged Iced Lattes and Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martinis.
The Pumpkin Spice Latte has a rich history, first introduced by Starbucks in 2003 as a seasonal follow-up to the Peppermint Mocha. After testing the beverage in a handful of stores, it quickly gained popularity and was launched nationwide and in Canada the following year. The drink’s success skyrocketed with the advent of social media, as fans took to platforms like Facebook and Twitter to express their love for the PSL.
Interestingly, pumpkin spice as a flavor phenomenon didn’t really exist before Starbucks created the Pumpkin Spice Latte. While pre-blended pumpkin spice mixes were available for baking in the 1930s, it wasn’t until Starbucks’ signature drink that the flavor truly took off. Now, pumpkin spice variations can be found in a wide range of products during the fall season.
Starbucks estimates that it has sold hundreds of millions of Pumpkin Spice Lattes since its launch, with more than 424 million servings in the U.S. alone as of 2019. This early return of the Pumpkin Spice Latte is sure to excite fans of the iconic fall beverage and kickstart the seasonal festivities. Get ready to indulge in the flavors of autumn with Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte!
