FDA Empowers Safety with Inclusive Human Foods Program!

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has appointed James “Jim” Jones as the first Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods. In this new role, Jones will be responsible for setting and advancing priorities for a proposed unified Human Foods Program (HFP), which will focus on food safety, chemical safety, innovative food products, and nutrition. Jones, who has over 30 years of experience in positions related to chemical safety and sustainability, will begin his role on Sept. 24.

Throughout his career, Jones has been instrumental in addressing the impact of chemicals and pollution on the U.S. food supply. Notably, he played a key role in the overhaul of the Toxic Substances Control Act in 2016 and led sustainability programs such as the Environmental Preferable Purchasing Program and the Presidential Green Chemistry Awards Challenge. As a member of the Reagan-Udall Foundation’s Independent Expert Panel for Foods, Jones is intimately familiar with the challenges and opportunities facing the FDA’s Human Foods Program.

FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, M.D., expressed his confidence in Jones’ appointment, stating that his impressive career, extensive leadership experience, and vision for the future of the Human Foods Program make him an ideal candidate for the position. Califf believes that under Jones’ leadership, the FDA will build a stronger organization that will prioritize the safety and nutrition of the foods it regulates while staying at the forefront of food science and nutrition advancements.

As Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods, Jones will report directly to the FDA Commissioner and exercise decision-making authority over all HFP entities. He will also provide executive leadership and oversee resource allocation, risk prioritization strategy, policy, and major response activities related to human foods. Until the proposed HFP reorganization is implemented, he will oversee the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and the Office of Food Policy and Response.

Jones expressed his excitement about the opportunity to serve as the first Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods. He looks forward to helping the FDA realize its vision for the proposed Human Foods Program, which includes carrying out important nutrition initiatives to improve the health of the country. With his background in pesticide regulation and understanding of government programs focused on the safety of the U.S. food supply, Jones is honored to serve in this capacity.
