The article discusses AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution version 3 (FSR 3), a major update to the company’s open-source upsampling technology. FSR 3 is a competitor to Nvidia’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS, and aims to generate high-resolution images by rendering lower-resolution ones and filling in the gaps algorithmically to approximate native rendering.

FSR 3 is compatible with a wide range of GPUs from AMD, Nvidia, and Intel, including the Radeon RX 5000, 6000, and 7000 series, Intel Arc GPUs, and all Nvidia RTX-series GPUs. It is also expected to support unspecified game consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. This compatibility is more generous than Nvidia’s cutoff for DLSS 3, which requires a brand-new RTX 40-series card.

Unlike DLSS and XeSS, FSR 3 does not require machine learning hardware to run. Instead, it uses motion vector data from games to help generate interpolated pixels. The flagship feature of FSR 3 is “Fluid Motion Frames,” which doubles the frame rate by generating new frames to fit between rendered frames without doubling GPU rendering power. This feature is similar to Nvidia’s DLSS Frame Generation technology.

While FSR 3 provides a frame rate boost, there are some caveats. When the GPU is already pushing out a high frame rate, the algorithm can generate good-looking and non-distracting interpolated images. However, when the game is running slower, the algorithm has to guess more, leading to potential errors, especially with fast-moving objects.

Overall, AMD’s FSR 3 offers an alternative to Nvidia’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS. Its hardware-agnostic approach and support for a wide range of GPUs make it an attractive option for gamers. With its “Fluid Motion Frames” feature, FSR 3 provides a frame rate boost without requiring significantly more GPU rendering power. Gamers can expect improved image quality and smoother gameplay experiences with FSR 3.
