Microsoft is planning to release a big feature update for Windows 11, version 23H2, which will introduce many quality-of-life improvements and new capabilities. One of the best new features is the redesigned File Explorer, which will now have native support for RAR, TAR, 7Z, and other file compression formats. This means that users will no longer need to rely on third-party apps to work with these formats. To test the performance of the updated File Explorer, the author compared it to the popular app WinRAR and NanaZIP, a fork of 7Zip for Windows 11. The test results showed that while File Explorer had no problems with TAR archives, it was significantly slower than WinRAR and NanaZIP when it came to extracting RAR and 7Z files. Additionally, File Explorer lacks certain features like displaying a status bar, opening password-protected archives, and supporting formats other than ZIP for packing files. However, the author suggests that for the average consumer who rarely needs to work with these formats, the native support in File Explorer is sufficient. While the performance and convenience may not be on par with dedicated apps like WinRAR, the updated File Explorer will still make Windows 11 better for everyday use. Overall, Microsoft’s decision to add native support for RAR, TAR, 7Z, and other file compression formats in the redesigned File Explorer is a positive step towards improving the user experience on Windows 11.
