The Yello Press presents an exciting update on First Witness and their new home at 1402 E 2nd Street. With renovations underway, First Witness is looking forward to utilizing their spacious 10,000 square feet facility by the end of the year. This new space is more than double their current one, providing ample room for forensic interviews, advocacy, mental health, and medical exams.

But that’s not all—the highlight of their new home will be the addition of a Cultural and Spiritual Center. This is a first for First Witness, and they are thrilled to offer this opportunity for healing to their clients. Tyra Jaramillo-Kraemer, the Program Director, shared that they are collaborating with Indigenous communities, such as the Fond du Lac tribe, to ensure the center is inclusive and supportive. Discussions have included the need for a designated smudging center and the availability of books and resources to connect individuals with leaders in their cultural communities.

The board members at First Witness are expressing their enthusiasm for this development as well. Recognizing the importance of serving diverse beliefs, incoming board chair Kelly Haffield commented, “There are many traditions out there, and we have to find a way to serve those different beliefs that people carry into the doors.” Haffield, a former sex trafficking investigator for the Fond du Lac Police Department, commends First Witness for continuously striving to improve and better serve the community.

A key aspect of First Witness’s approach is cultural humility. They understand that cultural competency is an ongoing process, and they are committed to learning and serving anyone who seeks their help. Whether it involves creating a comfortable interview environment or providing weighted blankets for children, First Witness goes above and beyond to support individuals on their healing journey.

Tracie Clanaugh, the Executive Director, emphasized the importance of preventing child abuse through education and support. By giving children, parents, and teachers the tools they need, First Witness believes they can break the curve of abuse and not only respond to cases but also prevent them.

The community’s generosity towards First Witness’s capital campaign has been inspiring, and the organization is grateful for the support they have received.
