In the latest trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Square Enix has given fans a glimpse of the return of Roche, one of the remake’s wildest new characters. Roche, an unhinged SOLDIER known for his ridiculous motorcycle acrobatics, made a brief appearance in Chapter 4 of the original game’s remake but was absent for the rest of the story. This left fans wanting more, as Roche’s character added much-needed depth to the SOLDIER organization. Now, with his return confirmed, it’s likely that we’ll see more of SOLDIER in Rebirth, offering a new perspective on the elite forces of Shinra.

Roche’s reappearance could also provide an opportunity for Cloud, the game’s protagonist, to confront his own identity as a former member of SOLDIER. As fans know, Cloud assumes the persona of Zack Fair, a true SOLDIER, and seeing him interact with actual members of the group could create interesting drama as he grapples with his fake memories.

Square Enix seems to be aiming to give Shinra a more prominent role in the Remake trilogy, as it takes a backseat in the second half of the original game. Creative director Tetsuya Nomura previously mentioned that Rebirth will feature an “expanded” story for Rufus Shinra, the newly-minted president of the company. This expansion opens up possibilities for the involvement of SOLDIER and further exploration of Shinra’s resources and goals.

Additionally, Roche’s appearance in Junon during Rufus’ Welcoming Ceremony adds to the intrigue. Given Roche’s obsession with Cloud, it’s safe to assume that he will have something to say when he discovers the party at Junon. The enhanced Welcoming Ceremony minigame, in which Cloud recruits Shinra soldiers, will likely feature Roche in some capacity.

With Roche’s return and the confirmation of Kyrie’s presence, Square Enix is showing a commitment to continuity and expanding upon the world of the Remake. Moving beyond Midgar could have made Rebirth feel disconnected from its predecessor, but the inclusion of these characters and plotlines reinforces the idea that this is one massive experience split into a trilogy.

Fans will be able to dive into the world of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on February 29 when it releases for PlayStation 5. In the meantime, stay up to date with the latest gaming news by subscribing to Inverse’s daily newsletter. Trust us, you don’t want to miss out on any exciting updates!
