India’s push for electric vehicles (EVs) is creating new opportunities and transforming lives. Preethi, a transgender woman in Bengaluru, was given the chance to turn her life around when she received her own electric rickshaw through a charitable donation. She is now one of many EV owners in India, benefiting from the country’s efforts to reduce emissions while promoting a “just transition” that includes people from all economic backgrounds. While EV donations are rare, experts say that electric vehicle companies and government programs can provide training, jobs, and affordable transport to benefit those with lower incomes.
Preethi’s success story demonstrates the positive impact of EVs on individuals and the environment. The charity that donated her rickshaw, Shishu Mandir, aims to reduce pollution while empowering women and transgender individuals. They have donated 17 electric rickshaws so far and plan to donate five more, along with providing training and licenses.
The transition to clean energy requires upskilling local communities, according to experts. Job training programs, such as India’s Skill India program, can be tailored to prepare workers for clean energy jobs. This includes retraining workers across the auto industry, from manufacturers to mechanics. If the transition is not inclusive, millions of people will be left behind.
Preethi’s new job has allowed her to afford her own home, pay off debt, and save money for the first time. She earns up to 2,000 rupees ($24) a day and benefits from lower overhead costs, as she doesn’t have to pay for gas or maintenance. Her customers also benefit from her services, ranging from vegetable vendors to mothers who trust her to transport their daughters to school.
Charitable organizations play a small role in achieving a just transition, and it is important for large corporations and government programs to replicate the positive experiences of individuals like Preethi. Companies can invest in training programs for local communities and price EVs competitively to ensure they are affordable to more people. Preethi herself hopes to inspire other transgender women to take up electric vehicles, and she has set her sights on buying a larger electric vehicle in the future to expand her business.
India’s efforts to promote EVs are not only reducing emissions but also transforming lives and creating opportunities for those who need them most. As the country continues on this path, it is crucial that the benefits of clean energy reach all members of society.
